Optimizing Fuel Oil Tank Capacity

05/06/2009 4:02 AM

How to optimize the designing the capacity of the fuel oil tank used for the glass furnace. Is there any risk matrix available to decided like if the capacity exceeds this value we have to go for to tanks and reliability of supply like that.

Hi,

Fuel tank size is greatly depend on the availability of the fuel supply, transportation and space available ,fuel consumption etc.

I am operate a glass factory more than 20yrs..from my experience i will stock about 10days,the supply source sea port just about 40km from my glass factory but have to cross to next country.

My 3 furnaces daily oil consumption is about 50K liter and my fuel oil tank is 600K liter.

But now all i already converted to natural gas for 13yrs, and fuel oil as standy by fuel source. i hv to pay fuel oil company for tanks rental.

Regards

I have the basic factors that determine the storage capacity are

· Daily consumption and total monthly consumption

· Reliability of the source of fuel supply

· Mode of transport, its reliability and economics

· Fixed investment and operating costs

· Statutory requirements.

Is there any decision tool available to decide the capacity of tank required? Because if high value is selected than there will be increase in cost of the project in other hand if the capacity is less it lead to operational problem in future.

If i am your position i will ask the fuel oil company to build a tank which is enough for 3 days stock. Before i change to NG we are used LPG as well for fire polish machine,WE and FH , Lehr. our gas supplier install a bullet tank just enough for 1.3days, consumption 5 to 9 ton /day and bullet tank is 2 x 5 ton so everydays they have to top up all year round. But few times they can cope up ..and they encounted huge claim from us.
