water main pipe...

05/09/2009 4:38 AM

I have some doubts... I have to ask anybody who knows in designing a water mains. There are 10 buildings and composed of 800 persons in this compound. How to size a water mains? Is there a need for demand factor and what is it? thanks.

Where at? Have you asked the city, county, state or country engineering dept?

Dear friend,

you need to know the peak demand time and output capacity of this water usage (potable or sewer water) and should take the highest obtained value plus a safety factor upto 15 % is advisable by most of the designers of the plumbing system.

Rgds.

You need to know the following.

1) Approximate hourly requirement of the demand.

2) Storage tank capacity required to aborb the shocksin demand.

3) Pump capapcity.

Hi, my following calculation seems to be close to your requirement.

1. total population - 800 persons

a. One person using daily appro. 2nos bucket ( capacity of bucket- 20 lts) for all purposes i.e. 40 lts/day.

b. total requirement of water per day for 800 persons= 800x40= 32000 lts.

c. add 15 % for misc. works= 32000+4800=36800 lts ( say37000 lts) per day

d. total water requirement will be 37000/24=1542 lts/hr

e. water main pipe should be - 300 NB

You should consider the requirements for Fire Hydrants as well. With ten buildings in this camputs setting, they are needed. The fire codes cover this but the authority having jurisdiction will be the final word as they may have some specific requirements. You need roughly a 152mm line if hydrants are installed. Also need to check on pressure available for the main.
