Oil Seals - Linear Shafts vs. Rotary Shafts

05/11/2009 3:34 AM

Can the rotating oil seal be used on the linear motion shaft?

The oil seals that used on the triplex pump, (Bear pump & equipment) had been change out for 3 times, but the leakage occurred once the pumps ran for few minutes; the shaft have been checked and no scoring or nicks had been found. Besides, the shafts are linear motion.

The 3 different type of the seals are (CR12458, National 471766 and National 410163). Personally I suspect the seals were wrongly installed, all these 3 types of the seals should be used at rotating motion shaft but not linear motion shaft.

I think your experience has answered your own question.
I'm sure seal manufacturers will have info and tech sales support to answer this.

My immediate answer would be yes, a rotating seal can be used but it probably won't last long, which is pretty much what you found.
I'd think maybe 2 standard rotating type seals fitted back to back with the 'open' sides outwards might work, if you had no alternative....?

lubrication of the dry side could be an issue....?

I think the seals you are changing out are referred to as wipers. A triplex pump has the seals internal and can not be seen from the outside. Most triplex pumps use packing and follower. A lantern ring is sometimes inserted in the middle of the packing to provide fluid to lubricate and cool plunger and packing. A certain amount of fluid does leak from the plungers as a cooling/lube medium. The follower is used to apply pressure to the packing thus around the plunger.

Prior to the next tear down consult your drawings and order up the internal packing for your machine. Have someone who is experienced in this type of equipment show you how to check and change the packing. G. L.

there is a major defferance between them in princaple .

the linear oil seal working in both direction .many times one of these two direction is in a dry working condition ((( EXE loaders HYD jacks))

the rubber part of linear oil seal has differant shape than the rottating one to enable it to prevent oil leak in two direction ,the shape of the rubber part must prevent the oil seal to over labe

rotating oil seal has a spireal spring along the parafary of the rabber part to ensure suaffeciant force and tension

rotating oil seals are used in lubricating system, but linear oil seals are used in power transmesion sys, so they suffering from a very high oil pressuer in most cases
