Hi,

There is no specific hard rules or formulas for designing steering mechanism. Before you start designing ,you need to ask question what type of output motion is required & what type of input motion you are providing like rotary, linear, reciprocating, oscillating,Intermittent & irregular. These functions derives your module of application and all these motions can be achived by different mechanisms by using links, kinematic pairs, inversons, gears etc.And there are many ways of doing conversions like rack&pinion, there you provide linear motion& you get rotary motion similary at bell crank lever, pulleys, levers etc.

And in case piston & crank, reciprocating motion is converted into rotary of motion of crank. If you are looking intermittent actuation better i suggest idea geneva stop will bring good start

If its roatary type, better to think of servo controlled closed loop function. If this is the case usually drivers considered as motors like DC & BLDC (it depends upon application,if its airbornBLDC is used ).Limitations in motor brings mechanical advantage like gears, which will bring good reduction for actaual actuation. In such cases slelection of motor & gear box carried out by iterative process by considering required output values, size,Innertia, speed etc.

There are many ways to think of by studying problem and i guess above details will throw a light for scratch start

good luck
