Cummins KTA50 Electronic Governors

05/13/2009 2:37 AM

We have a CUMMINS KTA50 prime power generator that will not carry its load continuously. This engine will run fine for 12 to 24 hours and then start dropping load until it actually goes into reverse power. We have changed the gov output board, and made many adjustments to the PCC3100 control module but nothing works for long. How about the fuel control valve? Is there a test for that?

I neglected to mention that the generator is part of a 15 unit generator complex. It is operated in parallel with the other units. Usually the units share load proportionally (i.e since all generators are the same size and make, they share the load equally +/- 5%)

When the generator that is exhibiting problems is working correctly, observe the output load and throttle/ governor position (the physical position of the throttle not an indicated position). When the problem occurs, again observe the output and throttle position. If the throttle position is fully open (or close to it) and the output load is low, then you have a fuel supply problem.

Please answer these two questions.

Does the generator smoke differently when the problem occurs? If so what is different.

Does the generator have proper grounding with respect to all other equipment? An intermittent ground can have a lot of strange results.

One other thing you might look at is the air intake. If in the remotest possibility it has in intermittent blockage this could cause the problem.

Thanks for the help! I've looked at the governor and fuel valve assembly but there doesn't appear to be a direct indication of its position (only duty cycle lites). I've been so concerned with the electronics and PCC3100 adjustments that I haven't checked the smoke color. The ground appears to be excellent (2/0 cable between all units) cad welded connections. I will double check the ground and check the smoke color. Thanks

I have similar problems with Cats 3508B. I´m still investigating. Because my Gens are Electronic injection, and I don't have the "Electronic Technician" tool from Cat is quite difficult to troubleshoot, but for now, I found the Relief Valve of Diesel Transfer Pump,( in 2 Gens) with Seat distroyed and Disc damaged, so I will never get good feeding pressure!! I'm convinced that the problem is related with diesel feeding system and/or diesel temperature. Good luck for you.
