Locked Out: My Dell Laptop Won't Let Me Log In

05/14/2009 12:43 AM

I can not Log on like I use to

The standard way I use to log on to windows XP is to click on the OK button on the window XP welcome screen which already had my user name type in and no password needed to log on, just click on the OK button and my window desktop screen open up to run my computer.

The last thing I did before this problem started was I disable my firewall and system security to download the updated Cox Security Suite Powered by McAfee and the download was successful. So I started with a full scan on the computer and check the little box to log off when the scan is finish.

When I came back to Log on like I usually do, with my user name type in and no password needed, so like I usually do I click the OK button to Logon to my desktop screen. But now a another window pop up saying a logon message your account has been disable please see your system administor.

So I call Cox-Tech solution, over the phone they said do this and that, which I did and that did not fix the problem so they said over the phone that it a McAfee problem and I should call them so I did and they try to help me, but could not. So they said I needed to call Microsoft. I call them, we try this and that and they could not fix the problem so they said that I needed to contact my administrator, where I purchase my computer from. So I call Dell and talk to a technician, he said he can fix the problem but before he start he needed same information ,on what I thank cause the problem, I mention it above

So now when I try to Log on another window come up saying this computer system #42D0051-595B is protected by a password authentication system you cannot access this data on this computer without the correct password, than it ask you to type in a primary or administrate password and click enter.

Dell technicians gave me two passwords to try but that did not work. After talking to them I notice that the password that was giving to me was a eight digit or units password when on my system I think it a need a nine digit or units password code.

After trying to do all the thing, I was told to do now my labtop wont start even in the safemod. I try to boot by press F8 key repeatedly but that same window came up said what I mention above.

If some one can help me fix this problem I will be thankful again. I have a Dell Labtop Inspiron/9100 with window XP – Professional 1-2cpu.-

Service Tag 42D0051 my cast number is 640378221 My Phone # 619 262-5226 the best time is 1-4 pm eastern time.

thank you

Michael

There is a program on the Winternals ERD Commander CD called Locksmith: this will allow you to re-set the password. The ERD Commander CD is bootable - when asked, attach to the existing Windows installation

There is also a bootable CD called the "Ultimate Boot CD" (this is NOT the same as the "Ultimate Boot CD for Windows" - this is the Linux based boot CD). There is a routine on it which allows password reset when the Windows registry is loaded, but it does NOT enumerate the accounts - you need to type in the exact account name, and then you are able to reset the password...

Turn your laptop off, then press the button to turn it back on; as soon as it starts to come on, start hitting the F1 or F2 key (one of these will get you into the setup screen) and proceed until you find where it says "password enabled or disabled". Disable the password required mode, then save your changes and exit. You should then be able to start up normally...........then trashcan Mcafee and go with AVG 8.5; it is free and a much better program to boot.

Hello,

You could try this: "Ctl" "Alt" and "Delete" when you get to the regular login screen.

You may have to try a few times, wait a few seconds each time.

You might get lucky and find that the "Administrator" password is not set.

Do not enter a password, type in "Administrator" as a user. It might work it might not.

Worth a try.

If that does not work there is the Peter Nordahl method.

The same scenario happened to my daughters Dell Laptop. I was able to hit Ctrl+Alt+Del (twice) after the user account was displayed at login and then I logged in as Administrator (with no password) and was able to go to the control panel (user accounts) and delete and change the password.

Hope this helps.

Boot the computer. Tap F8 untill you get a screen that gives you the option of running in safe mode. Click "Safe mode" When you get to the screen that asks you to log in, do so under the "Administrator" account. By default there is no password for that account. From that desktop you can get into User Accounts and change your settings for the other account, troubleshoot, uninstall software, ect.

Microsoft does not like to make this known because it is a huge flaw in the security of the Operating System unless you are aware of it and set up a password for the main "Administrator" account which most people arent even are aware that it exists.

P.S. Do like dude said and dump McAfee. It is garbage. Also be aware of the programs you are installing because alot of the free ones could be Malware in disguise.

Later,

Steve

Try to download Hirens Boot Cd, it is available on the net. This program helps you to change any admin password on you computer. It has many other tools also.

I tried it several times and works fine.

hi Michael,

hopefully, your laptop had with it the DELL OEM recovery disk, or at least you've created its recovery disk(s).

put it in the CD/DVD drive, and boot.

I can't remember exactly the menus, but the re-installation should be pretty straightforward and not confusing. you will be presented with 2 options: "system restore" or "system recovery". in your case, I'd try system restore first, and select a date that was before you installed the problematic application.

that should work. if not, then do it again, but this time select "system recovery" this will reformat your drive, but bring it back to the condition when it left the factory. this is the painful option, but at least it removes the problem. be warned that this is a REFORMAT solution. if you've not backed up your files earlier (and from your current situation, you're apparently not able to do that), you'll have like a brand new machine after this operation.

HTH!

a recovery disk(s) is/are provided by the manufacturer together with the laptop. well, it used to be, AFAIK. my HP came with a D: drive which contained the recovery software. i did not have a recovery disk, and so I created one (actually it was 2 disks). it is used to restore the machine to its original factory condition.

try to look for your recovery disk from the package. if you can't find it, contact immediately your vendor, or DELL. they should be able to help you.

at this point, I must warn you that if you format your laptop with a new OS (even a legit one), it might not be able to recognize your devices anymore, e.g., your DVD drive might become CD drive, your network devices might not be found, etc. this is because your laptop's Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) OS was fashioned exactly for your laptop. whereas a new off-the-shelf OS does not consider the existence of devices. you will have to install each device's driver. and *that* is truly a pain.

for that reason, it is very important that you use the recovery disk to reformat your machine.

HTH!

First I would save my data. You can remove the HDD and connect it to an other PC as drive D:. Now you can access and save all of data you had stored on the drive contains the locked system. Then put the HDD back to the original machine and try the steps described in (3) and (11).
