Best cnc machines for prototyping

05/14/2009 5:47 PM

What are the top ten CNC machine brands for prototyping? Please explain why they are rated above other brands. I am less concerned about size and more interested in which brand is known for ease and speed of setup, accuracy, precision, long life, etc.

Why not search the Internet for as many CNC machines as you can find and tabulate all of their specifications and prices as a first step. Then possibly some one here can express an opinion of relative preference for one or another.

You didn't mention what kind of prototypes you desire to produce! All in all you inquiry if far too general.

Good answer stirlingstan. OP: What is workpiece size intended? material? Geometry symmetry? do you need turning or milling predominately? I think 5 axis minimum. Without idea of your prototypes, that may be underkill poverkill. also, volume of prototypes?

Many people in US buy HAAS, they are inexpensive and workmanlike quality. for low volumes, probably a good fit.

I personally have lust in my heart for citizen or tsugami or index or tornos or traub. (no monogamy for machinery!)

like dating a supermodel.

Three turrets, two opposed, 36 tools, driven tools, over a meter between spindles, yes, this would probably get the job done...

What do you think the hourly rate would need to be to cover the machine payment?

Et tu brutus Milo

Of course I should have guessed by

People say between two opposed opinions the truth lies in the middle. Not at all! Between them lies the problem, what is unseeable, eternally active life, contemplated in repose.

And I thought you would have said Dorris Day for VTL or Mario Carnagghii or something on those lines

Again loading, unloading, accuracy etc - a bit depends on the controls too ...

Such an open ended question, only you forced me to go OT.

Well my normal choice would have been

But I don't think she was what we'd call a supermodel...

Definitely High Rpm and multi axis...

Remember, when prototyping always wear your Personal Protective Equipment!
