Line-Side Vacuum Contactor for FCMA

11/25/2006 3:21 AM

Whether it is required to install a line side vacuum contactor in FCMA soft starter panel though there is VCB with surge suppressor in Circuit Breaker Panel.

Pl suggest.

Yes.It is recommended to have a vacuum contactor panel for FCMA starting system in the line side with surge suppressors.

Can you tell me reason behind it. As I already mentioned VCB with surge suppressor is there in 6.6KV switch board. In FCMA starter panel we would like to have only neutral side bypass device for FCMA. pl note we are starting a boiler feed pump motor of 6.6KV, 850KW SQ ind. motor.

Hellow ..sachidananda ...this is about FCMA SoftStarter:- Soft starting is achieved by way of connecting an FCMA current controller in series with the motor during starting thereby reducing the starting current by potential divider action as shown in fig. The impedance of FCMA decreases with the increasing motor speed achieving a voltage ramp and torque ramp at constant motor current. After the motor reaches full speed the FCMA is bypassed with a contactor thus allowing the motor to Run at full voltage.
