Water Treatment - Removal of Othro-Polyphosphate

We are a small soft drink plant in Canada and treat our incoming water with conventional treatment. We use Lime, FeSo4 for coagulation and we also super chlorinate... the clear water is then sent through sand filters and a carbon tank (to remove Chlorine)followed by a 1micron nominal filter. Everything was going great until the City, our water source, changed it's process. The City is now adding Othro-Polyphosphate. This is causing all kinds of problems for us.

First problem is with coagulation. The floc is hard to form and does not settle very well.

We are also experiencing a 60-75% reduction in the life of our Carbon. We tried different manufactures and types of carbon with Coconut shell being the best.

We are also experiencing problems with our finished product with respect to the CO2. It now requires more CO2 pressure to get the correct Gas Volume and we are having trouble with CO2 retention.

We tried to increase the amount of chemical (Lime and FeSO4) with no success.

Has suggestion?

Goossshh! It's not my area honestly but I will try some 'White Vinegar' to see if it neutalize some how such 'Othro-Polyphosphate' downstream, I don't know! But as far as I understand 'White Vinegar' act like a natural cleansing agent (Acid) I don't know again but check it out, Who Know's? How about some 'steam or ultraviolet lites as part of the sanitizing proccessing together, allset let me know if that help up at some point and remember "You have the Technology"..........Nice time now to all. Easy Now!!

Here are several ideas:

  1. Lime, alum, and ferric chloride were evaluated using a series of jar tests to determine their effectiveness in orthophosphate precipitation from synthetic wastewaters. Calcium phosphate precipitation was most efficient at pH 11.0 and a total carbonate to phosphorus, CT:P, molar ratio of 15.0. For these conditions, a residual total orthophosphate concentration of 0.12 mg/L-P was observed. The Mg:P molar ratio had little effect on orthophosphate removal from the synthetic wastewater. When alum was used, the minimum residual total orthophosphate concentration observed was 0.21 mg/L-P for an Al:P molar ratio of 3.0 and a pH of 6.0 when pH was adjusted before and during alum addition. When ferric chloride was used, it was found than an Fe:P molar ratio of 3.0 and a pH of 6.0 resulted in the lowest residual total orthophosphate concentration. This value was 0.19 mg/L-P when pH was adjusted before and during iron addition. A multiple regression analysis produced mathematical relationships which can be used to predict residual soluble and residual total orthophosphate concentration for lime, alum, and ferric chloride treatment.(source: http://www.cababstractsplus.org/abstracts/Abstract.aspx?AcNo=19881921630)
  2. Let your water pass through a bed of fast-growing plants. As the water flows past the plants, they'll remove the phosphates. Harvest them frequently to stimulate new growth: the budding plants will absorb a greater mass of phosphates than the old ones. After the water has flowed through the plant bed, it can be treated for use as normal for your process after filtration and disinfection.
  3. Add methanol to your water, then first put it through anoxic biological treatment to condition the bacteria, then aerobic treatment to enable the bacteria to perform luxury uptake of the phosphates. After removal of the bacteria, filter and disinfect your water, then treat it as normal for your process.This last method is normally used for wastewater treatment, but it can be adapted for use for your problem. Just ensure that there is no more methanol left in the water before using it for your process.

Best way would be to distill the water and then re-oxygenate it if necessary.

Possibly a strong base acrylic anionic resin or a type one porus resin should help, the downside it might be hard to regenerate off. You can ask at info@resintech.com and they are very good with technical support.

Towards improvement of coagulation, I would recommend you to add poly electrolyte gel solution for improved flocking[try both anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes and decide].The cationic poly should take care of your phosphates contaminations.Give your trial feed back so as to improve further.

Bigdog,

I stumbled across your post while looking for information on Polyphosphate and was wondering if you found a way to remove it? About 5 years ago, my municipality started adding polyphosphate to our water supply. When showering, I get a "sticky" feeling on my skin which results in a "burning" sensation on the skin after I dry off. I walk around all day feeling like I'm coated with something. The rest of my family doesn't complain. I have showered at other locations in the city without a problem although another house on my street (same water main supply) results in the same problem but on a scale of 1 -10 its about a 2, whereas at my home it is a 9 or 10.

I'd like to find a way to take the polyphosphate out of the water to see if symptoms reduce. Did you find a way to remove the polyphosphate from your water?
