Walking at Work

06/08/2005 8:47 AM

The Mayo Clinic is pushing for computer mounted treadmills in the workplace. They would like people to walk at 1 mph and burn an extra 100 calories an hour. The group is called NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Themogenesis )and measures things like fidgeting and standing. In addition to the tread-desk they also created a perimeter track with whiteboards so they can stand up while developing ideas.

For those interested they say that the cost of 10 workstations is about half that of regular cubicles and costs @$5.50 per square

Volunteers needed?

06/08/2005 8:58 AM

I saw this profiled on CNN (television) a few months back. 1 MPH is hardly moving and certainly wouldn't interrupt any working activity. In fact, you'd probably see greater productivity once folks got used to being on the treadmill. Better blood movement tends to neutralize work boredom and the post lunch blahs. If Dr. Levine is looking for volunteers, I'm game - not sure if HR and our Plant Department would go for it, though.

I agree. I try to take 2 walks (one mid morning and one in the afternoon) for 5-10 minutes to keep the blood going and to stretch out my legs. I was starting to get back pain so my doctor suggested light exercise a few times a day.
