It really depends on what you want to do. If you're only turning a fan to exhaust a paint shop, use ac. If you're driving a newsprint roller and you want the print to line up, use dc. There are thousands of different applications, each different. And, there are variations on motors, like variable reluctance, VFD, etc, etc, etc.

Hi LL, the type of power available is usually not a constraint, we some time rectify the AC to DC to drive motors, quite a few in our factory in machine tools.
