HALT and HASS vs. Traditional Testing

05/22/2009 11:45 AM

As an independent test lab we run both full HALT/HASS (product fault SIMULATION not operating condition simulation) and traditional stuff like heat soak, burn in, 3 axis vibration etc.

The question to the test community is why is this technique not more commonly adopted. If it were my product I would always do it when the product was safety critical, high value/volume or had other issues like long warranty life etc. Obviously HALT/HASS doesn't replace compliance testing but it certainly cuts big chunks out of R&D testing with BETTER results (more service risk faults found for design in HALT and production in HASS).

This is a veiw from an independent (UKAS accredited) test lab operating in the UK high technology Aerospace/Automotive/Telecomms sector.

My experience is that firms don't add testing unless it is required of them.

And while the firms I hung around that did HALT/HASS profited from having the results earlier in the cycle (because we ALL know failures in the field cost more), bad news was bad news and frequently it was the testing that was blamed. (If we didn't have to do ...)

Like many things that contribute to longevity, during the scramble to market it is perceived as another bump in the road.

Well worth remembering - a firm rarely has a "single" face. As a test house you deal with engineering - but field problems may come out of someone else's budget - so it isn't really in engineering's interest - the company's interest - but not the department's interest.

More fun along the same lines (further back as part of the design process) is watching houses figure out how to DO-178b and DO-254 AFTER the fact because they ignored that part of the contract until they were nearly done.
