Hydro Power - Machine Layout in Horizontal Francis Turbine

11/27/2006 6:09 AM

Please suggest, can we reduce length of the machine hall in a surface Hydro Power Station by keeping the two machines in opposite direction i.e. mirror image to each other (their draft tube will be at the middle of the machine hall and generators at the extreme ends). If so, how much we can reduce the length of the machine hall to enable us save Excavation cost and Civil Construction cost.

Also suggest what are the constraints in having this option. PLease elaborate Electrical as well as Mechanical Constraints too.

I don't have an answer as I know little. However the US Corps of Engineers may have a manual or a person that would advise you. http://www.usace.army.mil/ is the link to the Site. Good Luck.

This is more than a casual answer could fix for you.

I suggest American Hydro Corporation (US based) http://www.ahydro.com/index.htm they have a low footprint patented "Seagull" design that may be useful, as well as the full range of hydroturbines and expertise.

When I was in the industry 10 years ago they were the best performing hydroturbines followed by:

Voith www.voithsiemenshydro.com (Main plant in US)

Escher-Wyse (can't find them)

dear sir,

if you go for mirror image arrangement of turbines the direction of rotation on runner and generator will change.

so need for different direction(cw & ccw) runners & generators.

so mechanical and electrical equipment cost will increase, as well as maintenance problem also(no ideal runner we would keep two different spare runners).
