DVR and centralized video surveillance system

05/24/2009 3:37 PM

Greetings all,

I 've been a regular reader of the forum… I would like to thank you all for the great problems and solutions you provide.

I need to provide or suggest a solution to a multi site company. Each site has a video surveillance system with its own network capable DVR (each site has about 20 video cameras connected and active). This company has about 150 site scattered all over the world all connected to the internet (of course). They need to be able to access and view different cameras from a central site (located at the headquarters of the company). The problem I have is that each site was equipped with different brand of equipment (DVR, cameras…) changing the whole thing and getting a turn key solution is cost prohibitive (and wasteful)… first, is it possible? Any idea is welcome.

Cheers,

you are looking to spend a great deal of money! your company, if it chooses to centralize its video monitoring, is going to have to standardize its equipment. even still the central monitoring is going to be choppy. there are a lot of companies out there who provide the equipment, but you are going to have to find out what is right for you. more and more companies are providing ethernet cameras, but there is a bandwidth constraint on how many cameras you can hook up that way.

Vicon has some nice stuff, quite a few of the traffic cameras that you see on the internet or TV are of that type. You need to find a video security company that can provide you a range of options, and most importantly give you a live demonstration. I went to a Vicon demo once that was hooked up to cameras across the state.

Good luck!

This is a common problem with video management systems. Unfortunately, there are no standards for interfacing with surveillance DVRs. The best way to accomplish this is to use a PSIM solution. PSIM manufacturers develop interfaces to various DVR vendors. They provide an overlay application that can display video from various DVRs. The big tradeoff is that you need to buy an additional system (the PSIM). This can run $100,000 and up. Also, PSIM manufacturers only support a fraction of the total DVRs deployed. You can learn more at my site: IP Video Market Info and specifically at PSIM Overview. I am an independent analyst and not associated with any of these vendors. Hope this helps. Best, John
