Compaction of soil

We are doing compaction of soil bed as sub-grade of road. The degree of compaction required is 95%. We follow Indian Standard. The test results are as follows:

Max dry density - 1.86 gm/cc

Optimum Moisture content - 11.9%

The compaction achieved with moisture content are 99.39 (10.5%); 98.6 (4.5%), 94.79 (7.0%).

What is the interpretation of these results? Are they acceptable as qualified?

It isn't clear what the 'Indian Standard' is. If you are referring to obtaining 95% of Standard Proctor Density, and your listed results are in %, then there appears to be some error in the data. Depending on the soil type, i.e. clay, silt, sand, sandy loam, etc., the effect of being wet or dry of Optimum can be significant. Judging by the Maximum Dry Density and the Optimum Moisture Content, it looks like the soil is probably a silt-loam and the result for the sample at 10.5% moisture content is possibly OK. I doubt very seriously if it is possible to obtain 98.6 % at 4.5% moisture content.

My guess is that there is some variation in the soil mix or that the technician is not experienced enough to obtain valid data. If the first issue is the case, then more than one Standard Proctor sample is needed. I remember many times that inexperienced technicians would come to me with the excited declaration that we were getting densities of well over 100%, a clear impossibility and clear evidence of their lack of proper education to allow them to recognize some deficiency in their methods or baseline data.

It seems like your results do not reflect the dry density of the material or are erroneous. Most materials would need to be within about 2% to 3% moisture content of optimum moisture content to obtain 95% or greater relative compaction. Please provide the original weight and moisture content data that the calculations were based on.

its accepted but the second test need more water to achieve the moisture below the optimum 3% min , other test is ok
