I'd like to find a safe and easy way to iridite aluminum at home. Sometimes I would want to paint the aluminum, sometimes I would want to leave the iridite as the final finish. I have always been very impressed with the simplicity and corrosion resistance of MIL-C-5541 iridite, but the chemicals are not exactly homeowner friendly.
I don't actually require "iridite", but I have never seen anything else done to aluminum that does so well with respect to corrosion resistance, ability to accept paint if desired, and still "good enough for me" if it gets a scratch.
I have found the SafeGard CC-3400 Chromate Free Conversion Coating at www.sanchem.com. Their web page makes it sound just as good as normal iridite, but they state it is "RoHS" and "requires only simple non-hazardous disposal". I'll give them a call today, but since it sounds too good to be true I assume it will be out of my reach. They don't give prices on their web page. Any time I have to call a national sales manager to get a price I find that it is beyond my hobby budget. So far SanChem seems to be a sole source.
Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Bruce
