Electrodes tend to pick up atmospheric moisture during transportation or improper storage resulting in bad performance or faulty (cracks, pores, etc.) welds They can be maintained perfectly dry over a long period by storing them in a dehumidified room or in a room where temperature is kept 15 0 above the ambient temperature. With any other storing condition, redrying them in a drying oven before use is a must.
This is especially necessary for all hydrogen controlled electrodes which are designed to generate not more than 15 CC diffusible Hydrogen per 100 grams of weld deposit in order to avoid under-bead cracking in the HAZ of heavy and high tensile weld-ments. These electrodes must be dried in a drying oven in the range of 2500 C – 3500 C for an hour to two, prior to use. In no case the temperature should not go beyond 4000 C (max. for half an hour at that temp.) for any type of Low Hydrogen electrodes including Alloy Steel electrodes.
The higher temperature beyond the limits may remove total (100 %) moisture content in the flux coating , make them fully dry and result in cracking / withering of the flux coating during welding and making it totally un-usable. The same will be result if the electrodes are re-dried or backed beyond once.
The Best Electrode Management is to store the electrodes in a holding oven at a basic temperature of 1000 C after initial baking and could be kept for a long periods without any fear of over-drying. As and when required a limited quantity of electrodes, say for an hour's work or so – specially, when used for high alloy steel, high tensile steel welding (where the diffusible Hydrogen per 100 grams of weld deposit should be less than 10 CC) could be taken in a refill flask / portable oven where the temperature could be maintained in between 100-1500 C to avoid re-picking of moisture ..
This will help to get Optimum Quality (100% X-ray or UT) Weld results during Fabrication. Sridhar

However it will be best to consult the electrode manufacturer.
BTW why do you want to bake again and again?

It really surprises me some times who and why some one marks the posts off topic?
Well I don't mind it, but the reason could have been one I would be interested in.
And this is what I have seen in any number of posts of course only a few of those are mine, but again why?

I think there are irrational people everywhere.who just work one the basis of there perception about others.they have nothing to do with good or bad posts. I wish if moderators would have an IP tracking system that can tell who is doing what on CR4.This can stop most of hostile guests too.
But again the question remains for the OP - why to rebake-
You bake once (max twice) and then hold - rebaking at that temperature weakens flux bonding, and I have seen in my experience the fluxes falling down like flakes (and that is for E7018 that the OP referred)
Rebaking normally is not preferred.
But then this is also marked OT , I dont know OP will read or not,
rakesh:
I think that - in case of OT is like objection - it might be substantiated by the software-
Like You press OT button - then the vote is counted if you atleast type in why you think it is OT.
This may be reviewd by administrator - in case the post owner asks for review - objector's name need not come out.
I remember a couple of years back some one left the forum - just because one fine day all his GA points were gone (I don't remember but it was substantial from some where 30-40 he was left with one onlly and he said before this one also is gone, he is leaving it for good)
And you know, it is easy- I go to Rakesh Semwal (whom I don't like) - go to most recesnt GAs- open each thread and put one OT for each, all the border lines (2) are gone.
Then I log in with another alias ane repeat - erstwhile 3s are gone.
Tomorrow Rakesh wakes up with no GA in his kitty.
Some don't bother (unfortunately I am one of them ) but some keep a count and for them it is a bit of shock ()
BTW - the smileys are not transposed.
BTW2: why bother the poor man - let me mark myself that post OT (so now the score is 5+2=7 ) if some one thinks it is OT, then let it be.

As I said, too old to bother about the GA points (or OT points)
The point is not the GA,
If a comment on topic is made off topic, then the owner of the post (The OP) is not likely to read those. And that goes with the later searches for the thread.
So end of the day an information is lost due to some one thought that way (for what ever reason).
You see: GAs you read with care. other posts you read, OTs you skip.
the OT is to be used with more care (may be used once in a while) but I have seen when some one posts an OT, it is almost alwas marked by himself.
(Except on a thread itself that is of topic like the Giorgia or the Bath Tub Breaking - can not have any off topic.
Any way. given information to the OP, (through OT, though he must have bothered to read it before it was marked OT) so that finishes my job on this post . if he has not bothered to read, or whatever, it is his problem.
bye (form this thread only)

The problem is as I mentioned- Off topic means as You can see visible, but goes out of screen, and difficut to bring back again A GA or an OT never harms the person- no $s you know for a GA .
But anybody who looks at it later will not usually read these comments.
Since you are new, one more aspect - when you ask a question , you may check up in the right "search this forum" or "search all CR4" for question, and if you do not find it, or are not satisfied with the answer, then post question. We encourage this since that makes us use less of our brain in recalling the information.
Still there are same questions getting repeated again and again
"What should be torque on fasteners" , "I have a 50Hz motor can I use in 60Hz", "What should be cable size for ...A" etc.
BTW- your question is I have seen first time - and is interesting in the aspect a lot many in our industry is anaware (may be most) - put electorde, take out, re-bake - use and the cycle goes on. I have seen at my vendors - they do not keep a track of rebaking simply because - they don't know there is any harm in it.
Don't worry keep posting and soon you will be an old buddy here aware of the rules of the game.

Hi Rajan, did you see the informations available in previous posts repeted in #18, as well a few previous ones?

In the early 1980s I was the Chief Inspector for an ASME Code shop. Our 7018 and 11018 electrodes were first placed into an oven and brought up to 450* for an hour and then allowed to coast down to 300 - 350*F. The rod was then moved and kept in 300 - 350*F ovens for holding until use. Two or three pounds of rods were removed into small portable ovens to be used on the shop floor. Any returning rod had to be placed into another oven where it would be heated to 450*F for one hour and then returned to 300 - 350* holding. Reheating was only allowed once, and no one wanted to use the reheated rod. (It ran like garbage)
