Tata Plans to Bring Ultra-Cheap Nano to U.S. in Three Years

I'm guessing with all the standards & such - $4K in the EU $5K-$6K in the US?

Automotive News | June 5, 2009 - 12:01 am EST

Tata Motors, the Indian automaker that owns Jaguar and Land Rover, plans to bring the car known as the world's cheapest to the United States within three years.

David Good, a U.S. representative for Tata, confirmed statements made by Chairman Ratan Tata at a Cornell University forum this week and reported by Reuters. Customer deliveries of the Nano, which starts at about $2,500, are scheduled to begin in India next month.

Ratan Tata said it would arrive here in about two years, Good said in an interview today. "It might be two years and six months," he added.

The move stands to make Tata the second automaker to import India-built vehicles to the United States and represents a low-cost threat to established competitors. Global Vehicles U.S.A. Inc., of suburban Atlanta, plans to introduce pickups made by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. later this year.
The Nano "will need to meet all emission and crash standards," Tata told a panel Wednesday in New York at the inaugural Cornell Global Forum on Sustainable Global Enterprise. The executive said his company is also working to develop cars that run on fuels other than gasoline, such as clean diesel, biofuels and batteries.

Good, who attended the forum, said he couldn't outline how the Nano would be distributed. Options include creating the car's own network or channeling sales through Jaguar and Land Rover dealerships, he said. Tata Motors bought the two U.K. luxury brands from Ford Motor Co. for $2.3 billion in 2008.

Tata Motors plans to offer a European version of the car in 2011, the chairman said.

He got the idea to make a car that poor people could afford while thinking about the motorbike and scooter riders who maneuver through the streets of Indian cities with their children on board.

The four-seat Nano gets up to 65 mpg. Cheap labor helps keep the price down.

Production of the Nano was delayed by protests over land use where a plant was be located. The first 100,000 owners are being selected by lottery.

Reuters and Chrissie Thompson contributed to this report.

GOLF CART... my friend.. GOLF CART.

Better golf carts are already built across the USA and throughout the USA by American companies. They and are both better made and will run the distance with this piece.

Any golf cart can be licensed for the street in most areas and most of them can have ANY BODY STYLE dropped on top of the frame.

We build a better vehicle all the way around and it can power your home when it is not being driven. Just a thought. Of course it will cost more than this EV golf cart deal from India. Buy one oftheir motorcycles instead, they are made fairly well.

Can you come up with comparative stats for your own made golf cart and the car OP is suggesting? don't forget to give price comparison also.As you know its age of recession and every one is not rich enough to have a golf stick in his hand.

Rakesh, my friend,

I was just being somewhat spiteful about the little car and would actually like to see the Nano make it to the USA.

Before it is allowed on a major highway due to safety standards, it will be classified the same as a golf cart. Simply meaning, it cannot be driven on freeways and major transit areas where huge tractor trailers operate. The safety issue is just common sense as an 18 wheeler that must swerve for a golf cart, moped, or Nano may wind up killing the family in their mini-van who is in a seperate lane.

I'm sure you will agree with the safety issue of smaller and much slower cars being allowed on certain highways and byways.

Hi Mealer,

I think there is some misconception about use of Nano. It is just a city car I don't think it is meant for freeway drive. You can take it to your grocery store or kids can take it to school as they now drive big gas guzzling cars. One day in Delhi Mr.Ratan Tata saw a family on scooter it was raining. He felt the need for small affordable car for such families. This is how he was inspired to develop Nano.

Tatas are planning to have tie up in foreign countries for assembling Nano. They have already tied up in Thailand. If you feel interested then you should approach them.

Regarding their trucks, they had collaboration with "Benz" some 50 years back. It is German technology which has given them success.

Hello my India based friends,

The Tata is a great inner-city car as you suggest. I applaud the work done to create a smaller affordable vehicle other than a scooter for a family of four (I've seen the 2x6 "lumber" seating arrangements that stretch across the lane!).

Soon, we will see many of these inner city friendly cars.

Hi Mealer,

I have seen this car in showroom in Mumbai. It can not be compared with Golf Cart. May be it is small in size but it has features of the normal car. Can you call Golf Cart a Car?. Please don't underestimate your would be competitor.Rather get ready to meet challenge.

Yes, Suresh Sharma... You are right. I should not knock anything that TATA puts out.

I can appreciate nearly every vehicle TATA builds. The trucks are actually made quite well and their quality surprises me. I would love to be part of what will become of Land Rover!

The Nano is a cute little car that will find it's nitch and will probably sell very well.

I hope to have a production line to compete with TATA, in a friendly and agressive international type of competition, we can both envigorate our nation's economy and hopefully inspire other's to do the same.

Emission controls and crash resistance. Rarely do I see a golf cart doing 65 mph on one of the major highways....

To all on this post: don't waste your time replying to comments made by JL Mealer- he is an American Right Wing Nut & nothing more- he goes around posting on blogs about how great Bush & his right wing buddies are & how they had NOTHING to do with the state of the U.S. economy today. To him everything is the fault of Al Gore & the Democrats. Just another delusional fruitcake. Unfortunately, we have too many of his kind in the US today. When the truth is at odds with their perception, they just make up lies and point fingers. He has a fake company with no product, or patents only crackpot promises and lies.

Not true.... Bush was not such a great President and I am not a right winger.. Maybe nutty smetimes, but it entertains my sons and their friends!

You are correct that I do not care for Gore's theories.... But the only thing I have 100% against Democrats is their abortion issue... But that was a Supreme Court decision that we must live with.

And you should let people know that by your IP address you work for GM...Or very close to heart of the Detroit mania.
