Windows search XP

06/06/2009 9:21 PM

Regards.

The search through Windows search is poor as it it searches only partitions.

When I search with Windows search [VSuite.Ramdisk.Srv.Setu*.zip} a downloaded file by a server not showing the folder of download. Just says "saving in Temporary folder"

It is unable to search.

I use "baregrep.exe" by:

******** FREE GREP ***********

FREE GREP..........The great Linux search tool, this version's for Windows.

Yes, this version is free, no matter what the page seems to say .....(free.

GO THERE! <http://www.baremetalsoft.com/baregrep/index.php>

*******************

Its searche result is:

*********** Quote *******

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\OU1S6GIE\VSuite.Ramdisk.Srv.Setup[1].zip 2009-06-04 00:42:38:0893 (719,079 bytes).

********** Quote Ends *******

Although the file is in [...\Temporary Internet Files\*.* ]

No such folder is shown:

[ ...\Content.IE5\OU1S6GIE\... ]

Need help to understand why it is so:

1. Windows Search-companion cannot find the file inspite of all the settings in Folders-options are set for showing all the files & folders.

Why windows search is so poor?

And why the folder(s) searched by bare-grep do not exist ?

Any clue & help please.

Kind regards

Read the complete article and follow the directions to configure to your liking.

You already have what you're looking for but you can't find it without directions.

Perhaps it can't find it because you have limewire, the music and video theft program on your computer...

It was better you have logged-in & gave such remarks.

I don't know about the dirty things you have assumed.

Sorry for my remarks but I have to reply to your remarks.

Even in your assumed position SEARCH should be able to find the files & folders.

Windows [Except 9x] have no facillity to find in folders; it can only find in PARTITIONs.

I'm not really getting what you mean... If you go to Start (bottom left), then select Search Files and Folders, it will search and find files just fine. Am I missing something?

Hello vermin,

how are you?

I to do not understand why the OP cannot use the file search utility.

'Limewire' seems to me to be a simple p2p apps. I am not familiare with it but on searching for it this does seem to be a p2p program, and why it should have anything to do with not being able to do a successful search for a file on a particular computer.

The "Temporary Internet Files" folder is IE's cache. Its not part of Windows' file system. Users are not supposed to look there. All the filenames are different with IE's own catalog system.

You can setup a default download location for IE where all download will go. Normally IE will copy/move the downloaded file out of its cache after its completed. So even you've found the file, it may not be complete and could be corrupted.

Also you can look into the cache from Control PAnel->Internet Properties->General, Click "Setting" under Browsing History. You can then click View files to see all files in cache.

Re: Windows search XP

Regards.

Thanks for advise.

But Sir I find all the pages & Files downloded or accessed on line after the power failure & can recover most of them & save my time & money of re-browsing / download

of files /pages.

My question was How the 3rd party SW can find while Windows system can't?

Why the folders shown by the search of 3rd party SW are not shown in directory but directly in "Temporary internet folder" ?

All the files I search or get are mostly in-tact except not fully downloaded or pages not fully opened during power is there.

I will chech as your last para.

Thanks a lot to take time to look into my Question.

Regards

Have you configured windows to index temporary Internet files?

It is pointless to index or search a temporary file or have I misunderstood your quest?

Because files in "Temporary internet folder" could be partial and corrupted. Most users won't know the different. Most user will go to the website again and download the files again after power out to make sure they get a complete file.

Microsoft prevent a search in there so users won't pick up corrupted file and blame them.

As long as you can live with or use a incomplete file, you can get it from the cache.

Correct, if the file had finished downloading. The OP couldn't find it so start looking for it in the cache. The fact that its in cache means it may not be completed.

That is my original point, to set the indexing service to include temporary files, cache etc. then these files would be search able in windows search functions, search in indexed locations etc..

Re: Windows search XP

Hello Haajee,

This problem sounds like it will be overcome if you configure windows search to search all files including 'temp' and cache of downloaded files.

It should that your search is not configured correctly. And, you will find the answer in the help files of windows. I do not use windows now so I cannot advise where to look in the 'Help' files. But I know I was able to configure my search system to search every file I had by looking though the 'help' section. Just type the request you want over and over again if need be, into the help section address window, renaming and rephrasing your request until it works. Or, just sieve through the 'Help' section by hand.

Have you thought about getting a book on how to configure windows search? There is plenty to choose from.

I also think your remark about bwire inappropriate. He has no choice of when or if he is given a 'GA'. The obvious reason he got a GA is because he listed a site which is a useful one for you and others.

No insult intended....................

I tested this and really I can't understand what your problem is... I went to my C drive, and looked for the folder. It resides at C:\documents and settings\"my name"\local settings\temporary internet files. Inside there were a bunch of odd little files.

Are your permissions set correctly for the PC you're on???

Will you please elaborate it !

What I get from is:

#13 & further to #14:

<< Have you configured windows to index temporary Internet files? >>

C:\Documents and Settings\ is indexed; "temporary Internet files" folder is included.

<< It is pointless to index or search a temporary file or have I misunderstood your quest? >>

Not files but folders are indexed; while files are searched within.

I can only run either from "Search" result or accessing the folder physically for the file.

What I understood from your post my reply is [may be irrelavent to your wordings]:

I am sure & like to ensure you that all the files in [temp folder not thr *.tmp or else files ] needed are found intact & have installed OK & all webpages I could open while Power is there I found full info I needed.

Hello Haajee,

You should try and make a habit of saving any downloaded files you want, to your Document .doc .

Saving any page you want to Documents, mean you will have a link as well. If they are in a .temp file sometimes there is not enough info saved to be able to make out what a particular file is and, where it come from.

I see bwire is helping you. He knows what he is doing and can explain it well. Take care. Take care.........

Dear Sir.

Thanks for advice.

Please try to come to my point :

I search those files in "Temp ... Folder" which are fully downloaded forcibly by the server [xxx] there & any webpage fully accessed but data could not be copied before the power-shutdown.

My question that the last folder in which the 3rd party search showed the files is not in the :

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\OU1S6GIE\

Folders not shown but the file which I recovered from search

[ VSuite.Ramdisk.Srv.Setup[1].zip ]

\Content.IE5\OU1S6GIE\
