Through my toy buying years we bought the same crap available anywhere (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Power Rangers) then as my kids hit the tweens we shifted to buying British in massive quantities (massive to my wallet at least) with the discovery of Warhammer-40K or look up Games Workshop.

Flip side - they put a lot more money into making it cool. And when I say cool...

And it came with tanks!

An amazing job of getting a lot more money out of the hobby than when I war-gamed with Napoleonic miniatures.

And on the plus side, the rules were just as hair-splitting and complex and they learned them one and all. Good for the brain.

Of course we also acquired the "merch" - the novels, the T shirts, etc....
