Best insulating material

06/13/2009 11:45 AM

Hi all,

Currently we are using 75 thick calcium silicate insulation for steam pipes. Please suggest me alternate material to reduce insulation thickness as we have limited space available for insulation.

Steam Working temperature 350 deg

Pipe diameter 150mm

Have seen Ceramics , and in old shipbuilding days, asbestos, bonded with hi temp bonders--(good luck finding this stuff anymore)s---what surface temps need to be achieved? Cool touch? No contact combustion?---A little more data please-C-MAC

Aero-gels are now commercially available. Look it up on the net. This material is expensive but is is about the best insulation you can get as far as thickness is concerned. The cost might be acceptable in your application.

Lithum Boro aluminum silicate glass will decrease the thickness and will always perform better than calcium silicate glass system. This glass is commercially available in market and if needed help let me know I will provide the information.

There are companies who makes suspension in US and I am not sure which part of the world you are in so can not suggest you more than this. If you need I can provide you with how to make suspension but only when I know which part of globe you are

Rockwool also has better properties than calcium silicate.

Most of the wool types, while better insulators must be protected from water infiltration. CaSiO4 is usaually applied as a cement and is not so fussy.

Rock-wool is good insultaion but its R value is less than 30 against aluminum silicate coating with R value more than 40. This is also shown in the commercial in which one side is heated with welders torch and other side is on human Pam.

Fiber is good idea for insulation but needs to be protected from water. Water decreases insulation ability since this is dielectric and moves heat from one end to other with similar mechanism as polarization moving charge after exceeding its limit to store also call dielectric failure
