there are all kinds of bi-directional winhes out there. Air powered, electric, hydraulic mechanical, manriding, skyline/double drum, Isaacsen. It is a big subject once you get into it. The simplest bi-directional winch is a capstan winch - just watch the guys mooring a ship next time you are on a ferry. What is important and something you have not stated is what is the end use - then someone out there can advise you with some degree of accuracy of feedback.
