Recycled Plastics vs. Bioplastics

06/16/2009 6:51 AM

Our customer needs the green heart products(bluetooth) ,and two choices of plastic materials are suggested : recycled plastic and boi-plastic.

1. requirement for recycled plastic

The ratio of recycled material shall be to a minimum blend of 70% recycled material and 30% virgin based on weight.

Question: what kind of plastic can meet this requirment?

2. for bio based plastics, production of feedstock for thr bio based fraction must not interfere with food production.therefore,PLA based plastic or other plastic based on corn shall not be used. Bio based plastic based on castor oil are allowed.

Question: what kind of bio-plastic is always castor oil based?

Any response will be great appreciated !

Cannot comment on bioplastics, never been there.

We experimented years ago with 25% glass filled nylon just to see how far we could go. Please note that ALL plastics suppliers will tell you this is horrible practice, but we wanted to know.)

Batch 1 started with 100% virgin material.

Then batch 2 used regrind runners and scrap from batch 1.

Then batch 3 used regrind runners and scrap from batch 2.

We repeated this to the eighth level of re-processing before any physical problems were noted.

HOWEVER: We did have good control over the initial raw material and processing conditions of every intermediate step. We fully understood and knew the heat cycle history of the material being used and when finally put into practice, we only ever ventured to a third cycle before dumping the remnant material. (The item was brand marked with our own company identification and was not for an external customer, it was our name that was on the product in our own outlets.)

In your case the answer will depend on your thermal process control, the material wall thickness, processing parameters like shear during melt, filler materials and even the quality of your reprocessing equipment.

So, what was the ratio of new to regrind for batch 2? I'm guessing that you were nowhere near 70% regrind when you stopped.

I think we may be confusing "recycle" with "regrind". Semantics.

Bioplastics? I don't know either.

And to the OP: The questions you are asking indicate that you are not ready to take on this job.
