Writing Gearbox Specifications

12/03/2006 9:43 AM

I need to write a specification for a gearbox of a high-speed luxury yacht, I don't know what should be included in it and what will the gearbox be like. Hopefully anybody kindly enough to tell me something about this. Many thanks!

Won't you have to know the engine, HP, power curve, prop, etc. etc. first. Most manufacturers or distributors should be of some help. New boat or replacement for an existing one, etc.

If its Gas Turbine Driven or Diesel, You might try AGMA or API 613 Specifications.

FALK, MAAG, RENK, FLENDER are all gear manfacturers.

Specifying Just the gear box is not the answer. You need to turn over the specfications for the yacht to marine mfg. of Propulsion systems ie Mercury, Volvo Penta, Cummins ,John Deer etc , Just to mention a few of them. Theses Companys supply power plants for all kinds of boats.

Specific attention to application ie "Pleasure duty ,comerical duty , Hull speed etc. All this has a bearing on the selection of a propulsion system.

You can not do this by your self. You would be bogged down in details that take years to resolve.

Hi: perhaps things are not so difficult as posted. Surely you have some power specification that came with the engine: max. power (instant power, for an hour and so, it depends on the manufacturer) and continuous. Also they give you the life (generally 10.000 hours). This same figures are useful to specify some basic aspects of the gear box.

Other aspects are room temperature and, very important, how the propeller force is get by the installation. If it is taken by the gear as usual, you must calculate this force and will be a part of the specification. Also take in account the space availability.

Gear box of yatchs are refrigerated by water, sometimes in the same circuit of the engine.

Good luck
