cheap loudspeakers

06/22/2009 9:09 PM

Dears!

I´m intended to mount loudspeakers for micro computers using natural
wood from Brasil, using Solid Wood Reforestation.
I´m electronic technician working with telecommunications, but already
worked with sound in the past for 1,5year.

My project needs a 3 inch loudspeaker that is not produced in Brasil,
here only has 4 inch and so one and is too expensive.

Do you know where can I get informations about good loudspeaker around
the world?

Thanks a lot

This is a very broad question as speaker manufacturers are numerous. I used to build all sorts of speaker systems as a hobby and you will need to supply more information unless you just want a huge list of speaker manufacturers (a google search of "speaker manufacturer" produced 11.9 million hits).

What do you mean by "micro computer"?

What quantity are you looking at making?

What sound quality are you looking for (standard, high end, small but loud, good base, cheap (budget-limited), etc)?

What type of speaker(s) (full range, combination midrange / tweeter, separate midrange and tweeter, etc)?

How many per speaker box?

Amplifier power available (in RMS) per channel (ie- per speaker box)?

Limiting factors (price, size constraints, speaker impedance constraints, etc)

etc

It sounds like you are after a single 3" wide frequency range speaker per box (giving a matching pair for computer stereo sound), onboard amplifier (say 5W RMS per channel), good sound quality in a compact and affordable package for sale to residential consumers.

Can you please provide more information.

Jack, thanks for reply. Excuse my english errors.

Your answer suggesting to use 3" wide frequency range speaker is the best answer for my intentions.

I have some pictures about my desktop computer that I use in the company that I work. It has a couple of old loudspeakers from COMPAQ, made in China, using a single 3" speaker in each of them, one piece of plastic tube inside as used in bass reflex tuned box and a TDA1552Q amplifier from Philips. The date sheet said that it has 22 Watts RMS per channel.

These loudspeakers has incredible sounds comparing too other type of loudspeakers sold in Brasil. Nowadays there aren´t this same box in Brasil, HP bought Compaq and I think there is no HP boxes.

What quantity? I would like to be a businesmann ( entrepreuner) making high end tiny loudspeakers. But I know I have to start slowly, studing how is the best way to do this.

What sound quality? The great as it possible to perform in this class of boxes. I have some sound and vision magazine ( www.soundandvisionmag.com) and saw the articles about tiny loudspeakers, but the magazine don´t tell nothing about the speakers.

Speakers:- I think that one full range speaker per box is enough using 10 Watts RMS per channel, may be 20 Watts. Brazilian people is very happy and like a lot to listen many type of music. American music is played a lot here, but we have an AXÉ music that is played in all the country. Axé, is like a samba, but more quickly.

These are the pictures. Thanks.

Arlindo

If you are not concerned about using the existing plastic speaker box it would give you more options to mount different sized speakers (or two speakers per box).

The TDA1552Q is a 22W RMS per channel amplifier but is designed for 22W into a 4Ω speaker using a 13V DC supply. You can use it with standard 8Ω (or 6Ω) speakers at a lower voltage but it won't have as much power available, although you really only need about 5-10W for an average 3" speaker.

There are plenty of speaker manufacturers out there (both standard, specialised application and car audio) that make suitable speakers for your application but I think the best place to start is to learn more of the basics off the internet regarding speaker design, speaker frequency response, sound interaction when placing speakers into an enclosure, etc).

Are you going to buy the TDA1552Q in a kit set form or is it pre-assembled?

In the end if you are looking at buying lots of speakers then you are not limited to what's just available in Brazil, but you really need to know what is good enough for your application without spending too much money as it is easy to buy a really good speaker but ruin the sound with a poorly-designed speaker box, bad frequency crossover (when using a tweeter / woofer speaker combination) or underpowered amplifier. China has many speaker manufacturers that supply speakers for many well known brands of televisions and stereos and wold be a good place to get what you need.

Don't forget to always try with some samples before you buy in bulk. If it doesn't sound as good as you expected don't worry, a large percentage of the sound quality (and bass response) of a speaker system comes from a well-designed speaker box. A few modifications to your box and port (if you are using one) to "tune" the speaker(s) to the box can make all the difference).

I could go on but it is such a large topic area, but I will say that it is a very fun field to learn. Try a google or similar search of the internet for key words or word strings relating to your project (like "design guide speaker enclosure") as there is a ton of free information available on the internet to help you.
