Are you looking across the path and watching the object go by or are you pointing a laser at the object and getting a speed from the reflection?

If the object is moving toward/away from you, is the path at the same angle to you at all times? How large is the object? What's the composition of the object and its mass? Does it have surfaces that are normal (perpendicular) to the path of travel to help with laser reflections? How accurate do you need to be? In our small town, the local police department kindly offered to bring their laser unit to try measuring moving film speeds at our plant. This might be an option for you also.
