magnetic marker locater

06/28/2009 1:09 AM

What methods/equipments are available to exactly locate the magnetic markers that has been buried with pipe many years ago? We don't have any locating map and so our pigs cannot locate themselves!

Not my specialty, but I would suggest sending a "monitoring" pig through the system to log where it encounters any magnetic markers and then you can use that information to track any subsequent pigs.

I"m thinking of a pig that's simply like a piston (with seals so there can be no fluid bypass) so that it can measure actual displacement and data log any magnetic signatures it finds along the way.

hi there

We dont know their exact position and need something which can locate them by moving itself on the ground. We prefer not to use pigs!

By the way, welcome to CR4. I'm surprised that you haven't got some information from the specialists here.

As I said, this is outside my field so I would only be guessing to go any further, however here's a suggestion.

Your user identification only gives a name and not much else. I've observed that if there is more information, like (especially) the country that you are in and other specifics, then you will be more likely to get responses from the group on line.

You might also describe in a reply to this thread what you have already tried, so they understand that you are thinking about the challenge that you have and don't just expect someone here to give you an answer they may have toiled months to achieve.

You don't need to mention your company name or anything that can specifically identify you.

I suggest that you search the site for threads about "cleaning wax from wells" or similar and you might find a couple of gurus that have specialty knowledge in pipeline technology and then send them a personal message.

Again, welcome to this site.

I've marked this as "off topic" because it doesn't answer your question, but I do hope it helps.

Find someone that can smell for water using wires, I have found under ground pipes and tile line, It does work. Try it may even work for you. Take two wires and put a 90 bend on one end and hold loosely, hold out in front on you and walk slowly dragging you feet. when the wires cross or go out side to side you have made you find. Just try it what do you have to loose.

Ditch Witch www.ditchwitch.com to find a dealer around you. They have locator's for locating the pipe. Then they have a magnetic locater to find the magnetic stuff. They also have a locater for the splice balls if thats what you have. If you need more help you can email me at mhorn@ditchwitchofmd.com we are the dealer in Maryland. I'm sure our stuff can find it and some dealers rent if you just have one job. Hope this helps.

I remember reading of a manual procedure for leading a metal cable through buried pipe and using a simple detector for continuous pathway marking on the surface. The 'head' comprised a powered transmitter that allowed for continuous location.

Try looking at these: http://www.ridgid.com/Tools/FindIt-Which-Locator/index.htm

I believe that assumed a fairly flat and accessible terrain, however, and had an accuracy depending on depth and could be confused somewhat by the presence of other buried metal systems. But it may work.

How deep are the pipes buried ?

Infrared has been able to locate buried piping in / around refineries.

Depending upon fluid velocities, other ambient sounds, depth of pipe, soil conditions, sound detectors may work.

There are metal detectors that will locate up to 25 feet buried depending upon soil.

There are computerized mapping systems using metal detectors.
