Driving Speed vs Average Speeds??

12/05/2006 12:42 PM

i like to take tests just for the fun of it,, and recently took one that had a question, that i found puzzling,, and dont seem to make sense,, so i thought id pass it on to you for a thought,,

the question was" if you have 2 points- a,, and b,, and 2 cars, (trucks, what ever you like) ,, if both cars start at the same time, the first car does 30mph to point b, and then 10 mph back to point a, then, the second car does 20 mph to point b,, and 20 back to point a,, 1) does the first car get back first, 2) the second car get back first, 3) they bot get back at the same time,,

ok,, taking that you only have 1.5 minutes to answer, looking at this, you average the 30 and 10 out for a 20 mph so you would think the both get back at the same time,, not so!!! if you are fast enough to set up a sample and try it in the 1.5 minutes,, you would probably use the remaining time up scratching you head,, but ,, for simple math set the distance from a,, to b,, at 60 miles,, if you do the math the first car takes 8 hrs to get there and back,, but the second car does it in only 6 ,, what you say,, 2 hrs less,, but ,,, the first cars average speed is 20,, its the same distance,, whats up??? ok,, set up a different distance,, humm still the same results,,,

so for you people out there that like the brain teasers,, here's one to get your co-workers scratching, or that "huh pupy look",,,(you know the tilt of the head and the glazed eyes), have a great day, and make it fun!

This might be a teaser for a 7th grader, but not for an engineer.

a mathematician would start off..."consider a spherical car..."

im sorry for being so stupid in the gods of wisdom, engineers must be way,, way up there on the "IQ" ,

i thought this site was a place for comments, and as i noted it was for fun, do you rember fun?? and if im not mistaken, not everyone in the world is a master of bridge building,!! i was just trying to point out something that MOST people would miss or not realize, about the speeds of drving, time/speed. but i guess it was a mistake, ill try to get up a little on the engineers ladder of IQ, just for you,,,

and as for the comment on the avatar? (i call it your pic) i didnt see that only one person was alowed to have it, i just picked it from a list, and, i didnt look that close ,but i belive i picked it before you!! so there, but just to let you know, i do have a new pic to put in for me, and brought it in today as a matter of fact, it was just a temp pic, so ill try to change it ,,if i can figure it out,,JUST FOR YOU!! YEA RIGHT,,

IF YOU HAVE TO MAKE SNOTTY COMMENTS,, ABOUT SOMEONES POST, KEEP THEM TO YOURSELF, AND JUST SKIP IT, you feel you have to reply to every post?? or just like replying to those that are below you??

try to liten up and have a fun day, if you woke up today, you didnt get ate by a dinisour ,,, right,,, so it must be a good day!!!

Yes, but it's amazing how many times I've heard people mention that this type of problem 'made them think.'

That is, until an Engineer points out to them that returning at half the speed of the other car means that the first car would have to start at the far point in order to 'return' in the same time as the second car makes the entire trip...then they go "ah ha."

True, it's only an interesting problem when you actually have to do the math in your head, but "IQ" tests aren't testing your math skills, generally. They typically include a see-the-pattern or see-the-relationship type of 'math' problem, of which this is an example.

Whats News: nice avatar, anyway...

thanks,! yes i thought it would be one of those humm, thoughts, most people dont look that close at the big picture, at least i thought it was, the test was a iq test, and yes it had sereval parts to it, and there was a pattern part, and i guess i did well on that also, i just thought it would start more of a positive replys to the way some people drive on the roads, but instead i got a couple of replys of members that seem to not be able to control there nose height, ive read there comments on several threads,, and there is allways one that just cant seem to help themselfs, you know have to make a snotty remark to something to help justify there supieror bieng,, i guess,, lets everybody know that life is below them?? ,, sorry,, better stop,, i dont want to be included in the group,,

thanks for the reply, and not being out right ,----- ,, hope i do better next time,

I thought this is a place where ENGINEERS talk. That example is for kids in elementary scool!

For next time try something at least related with engineering and engineering knowledge

You only achieve an "average" speed if you are doing the two speeds for the same amount of time. The trouble in this question is that you end up doing the slow speed for a lot longer. In this question they made it really easy for you by ensuring that the "first" car takes as long for the second leg as the "second" for both.
