When do we use rogowski coil or a CT in the Ladle Furnace secondary circuit.

When do we use rogowski coil... ?

When we want to accurately measure the rate of change of the current flowing through the primary conductors in order to monitor/control the process without any errors induced by other electromagnetic interference in the meltshop.

In the event that you are not interested in the rate of change, of the current inpput into the furnace, but instead are trying to monitor the current itself ( the prime determinant of heating in the ladle arc furnace) the output of the rogowski coil will be fed into an integrator type of circuit in order to report the current itself, rather than its rate of change.

For process control purposes it is always better to measure the input directly (voltage induced in the coil is proportional to the current flowing in the conductor) rather than resultant or derivative measures (such as temperature rise in the hot metal) which may add other errors (sensing, time lags due to sensor location convection, insulating effects due to slags or errors due to falsely attributing current flow as cause of rise in temperature when in fact some of it is the result of exothermic ladle additions, (calcium carbide for desulfurisation, magnesium or other wire feeds, etc..)

I have no idea what you mean by a CT.

Since when did "we" choose to supply answers to what is obviously, a "homework" question.

Wait!!! I know the answer to this.

Since getting points for a good answer outweighs the fact that somebody is being lazy.

It's a shame that the "ego" will stoop so low to maintain an extraordinarily high level.

Shame on you "answerers" for caving in to "ego". Shame, shame, shame. Next time, think of the person asking the question before thinking about your own "appearance".

Really? What clues tell you this is obviously a homework question?

Having answered a host of questions from folks new to the steel industry and its new technology around the world, I saw no harm in sharing.

My thought of the person inquiring was new project engineer assigned to ladle met department of a new steel company. He is told to use this and wonders "what the heck is this all about?" Perhaps we'll find out. Perhaps not.

I would doubt that Ego or good answer points were my motivator. the ratio of GA's to total answers is far worse on this forum than would be accepted in any other endeavor, even taking into account the late addition of the GA feature.

I would respond that my answer was motivated to help mentor someone in my industry. My answers are always aimed to protect the inquirer and toward continuous improvement- in this case of a steel operation. I can't imagine that there are a lot of classes talking about ladle met stations... But I could be wrong.

But apparently that does not seem to be the conclusion that you reached, mr. guest.

SO again, please share with us how this was so obvious a homework question.

thanks for the feedback
