Have you tried new batteries in the remote, Guvnor? <Wheeze>

If it's given up then Dodgy Dave takes a few to Tibury Market every Thursday. You might find a nice one to replace it there. <Cough, splutter>

For heavens sake, stop pratting about & buy a new telly...or take it to a TV technician. Soldering irons don't work too well over the internet. Did you want us to fix it for you? <very deep sigh>.

Here is the Yahoo answer for you;

Connect wire A to wire X. Remove component Z & replace with a AB1234FG-2400v. Bingo!!! Your telly should be as good as new.

Is it made in China? Just unplug it (before you hit it with a sledge hammer)

That blinking light is indicating some type of fault of some kind... As if you didn't know. Talk to your local tv repair person - as only qualified technicians should try to repair such equipment.

Loved your answer. This is true action we need to take to bring back quality we are used to before our corporate world went in cost reduction without holding on to quality first approach.

As was stated in another post, it would appear that there is a fault - most likely in the micro-controller. The first thing I would do is cycle the mains power to the set and this will restart the uC. Unplug the set from the wall plug and wait 5-10 seconds before plugging it back in.

Another try would be to perform the power cycling but this time press and hold the power-button while you do it.

Thirdly, look in the manual, run a search string thru Google, or chat with a tech familiar with this set and see if he knows any special tricks that it would take recover from this problem.

good luck

Hi chandrakant,

If you find a solution please post it to CR4. I often get days when I go into permanent standby mode, blinking continuously, and achieving nothing!

regards

Chas

HI, I would definitely post a solution if i find one. Incidentally, how often do you go into permanent stand by mode? (I would prefer once every fortnight a good recharger for the mind).

H'm, six years of use and now it fails. I'll bet you it originally had a 90 day warranty. So your set lasted 24 times the warranted lifetime. Now I consider my self a reasonably frugal man, but you should consider what you are asking for us to do.

You could attempt to fix the television's first part that failed and get some more use out of it. To do this on your own you should learn the fundamentals of electronics so that you understand what that magic box on your dresser use to do. Next you will have to apply this new knowledge in a troubleshooting approach to identify the likely failed part. If none of the test points reveal an obvious hardware error, you will then have to learn some programing capability to discern how and why the embedded controller will not boot. Once you have identified the failed part, you will have to learn the craft of soldering and de-soldering to replace the defective part. Along the way you might return to this thread, politely apologize for misunderstanding the complexity of the problem and explain your improved respect of electronic engineers.

The easier approach would be to take this television to a local repairman, if one exists. Pay this man for his skills to troubleshoot your television. If he says that he can fix it, pay him to fix it. If the television is beyond hope, donate the television to the repairman for recycling. While at the repair shop you will likely now have the option to buy a new or repaired television to replace the dead one.

A word of warning, there are many parts in any system that will be expected to outlast the shorter expected lifetime parts. But to make an affordable product today, the parts that will likely fail from just age will age at the same rate. This will likely be why an honest repairman may tell you that he can fix it, but it may not be worth repairing. Soon another aged part will fail.

OK, I' know you're not going to electronics school before trying to fix your TV, and I bet you'd rather give it a try before paying someone else; and as stated by Redfred, aged parts are the key to the solve the mistery, mostly: capacitors. Electrolitic capacitors tend to dry over years of use, they look like a can wraped in plastic with specs like " xxxxuF xxxVDC " capacitance and voltage respectively; also they usually have two leads on the same end (bottom) but some have the leads in an axial fashion: one to each end and one of them is connected to the metal can.

Identify the power supply circuits and gun shoot'em (replace all capacitors) they're pretty cheap.

Before any precedure, discharge the cathode ray tube by conecting a wire to the chassis ground and slipping the other end between the glass and the "nipple shaped" plug that connects the high voltage from the fly back coil to the "cinescope".

The kind of failure produced by dry capacitors on TVs is oscilating; like you described in your post. The upwards end of them always have pre-cut vents that beak open in case of overload or overheating (to avoid explosion). A faulty cap would exhibit those pre-cut vents about to open ("swollen" cap end), slightly covered with brownish electrolyte or the plastic wrap around them is fryed.

But a good zap from an undischarged capacitor can do so much enlightenment. Just think of the out of body experience your denying him.

Besides, what gives you the idea he can identify which part of this magic box is the power supply circuit or what a capacitor even looks like. The limited troubleshooting information the OP gave us implies to me that he's either way over his head and should not open the back of this TV, or that he fully understands the complexity of repairing hardware and was looking for a simple known software reboot scheme.

CRT based TVs are a bad place to learn electronics today. As you imply there are parts of this machine that can do considerable harm after external power is removed. Also this is a machine rapidly approaching obsolescence if not there already.

I found this info. online:

1. Try a soft reset first. Just unplug the power cord for 15 to 20 minutes. Then try it again.

2. If the soft reset does not help, try a hard reset. Same thing, but leave the power cord unplugged for 4 hours or more; then try powering it up again.

3. If resets do not help, bang the set vigorously with your hand or fist. Sometimes a bad connection or cold solder joint will cause the problem. The vibration from the banging on the set will often reestablish the connection again

I 'm not sure iif the reset takes this long but, you should give it a try. I like the one about beating on the unit.
