Moths: A Low Tech Ally in the War on Drugs

06/10/2005 4:44 PM

Researchers have proposed a plan to breed thousands of Eloria Noyesi moths and release them into the cocaine-producing areas of Colombia. Once there, the moths will lay their eggs on coca plant leaves. A week or so later, the hungry catepillars that are born will eat the leaves and kill the plants. Proponents call the plan "natural". Critics worry about the possibility of "ecological mischief".

Australian Rabbits

This sounds like a good plan on paper. I just hope it doesn't go the same way as introducing rabbits to Australia or the Northern Snakehead fish.

such nasty moths have been already tried in Colombia with mixed results: the moth likes other crops, such as maiz (corn), frijoles (beans) and guava (a tropical fruit). In areas of coffee growing, moths are attracted by the sweetness of coffee beans sherry outer shells. The result: poor Colombian peasants are becoming hungrier and more desperate, which in turn makes them more eager to help the drug dealers who employ them. It would be much easier that those crazy Americans using drugs just stop doing it and become civilized. Let the poor peasants in Colombia in peace.
