The only thing I can think of that you can do at work is to check the air cleaner. If it is oily, it needs replacing immediately. If just dirty, you may be able to pound it on the cement to clean out some of the dirt. Is the "check engine" light alway lit? You need to put a OBDII tester on it to see what it needs. Some places like Checker Auto Parts will do that for free. You may have fouled spark plugs. Check the oil level and coolant level while the engine is cold. If these steps don't find anything, you may need a professional mechanic. Good luck.

Ignoring all of the other things that can go wrong. I'd start with the simplest and most obvious. Quite possibly the fuel filter is plugged. That or air filter.

I had a Nissan Sentra that did this. It would bog out after running for a while and would stall and didn't want to start until it sat for a while. I replaced fuel filter, air filter and even fuel lines and fuel pump. Still had the problem. I replaced the distributor but still the problem persisted. I happened to look at it at night and noticed the spark plug wires had little blue sparks all over them. I replaced them and it ran like a top. Turns out the bad plug wires loaded up the distributor and made it overheat which shut down. I do remember it getting too hot to hold your hand on for long! Look at it in the dark and see. If your car is jerking (tension misfiring) under acceleration, you will need new spark plugs and wires. If you remove the spark plugs, there is a good chance you will see carbon tracking or burnt streaks on the side of the porcelain when spark is jumping to ground.

If your car is just sluggish when accelerating, it is most likely a clogged catalytic converter or weak fuel pump. To check fuel pressure, you will need a fuel pressure gauge. To check for a clogged converter, you will need a back pressure gauge. You might be able to get these from a loan-a-tool from your local parts house.

With 74k miles and it being a Neon, I would suspect you need plugs and wires. The catalytic converter will have a federally mandated 80,000 mile dealer warranty.

These are classic fuel filter symptoms. If you put it in neutral and race the engine, it will do fine but will not pull under load.

It could also be a fuel tank vapor recovery problem. Try removing the fuel cap and see if it runs better then. If you leave the cap off, you will get a check engine light but you may get home if this is the problem.

The fuel filter is an integral part of the fuel pump and is not serviceable as a separate item.

While there is a fuel filter in the fuel tank that is there to protect the fuel pump itself from dirt. There is also a replaceable fuel filter in the fuel line outside the tank.

Not that it matters other than not misinforming the audience. I was incorrect in stating that the fuel filter was not serviceable. I did not do any research and just assumed 2005 Neons were similar to previous Neons.

The fuel filter is serviceable, but it is part of the fuel pump assembly. The filter is also not available from aftermarket parts stores. Chrysler has been notorious for not having serviceable fuel filters.

If you get to the point that you believe the cat- con may be plugged, and you do not have access to a back pressure tester, you can just create an exhaust leak by removing the O2 sensor, or loosening the exhaust manifold from the head. If that change alone allows the car to drive substantially better than before, you have a restricted exhaust. The only common exhaust restrictions today are the cat-cons. Good luck.
