Website That Saves Energy?

07/19/2009 2:53 PM

http://www.blackle.com/ was shared by a coworker a few days ago as an energy saving web search engine. It later got me thinking that this would save energy if using CRT monitors, but what about other screens? The backlight is constant regardless of color presented to the display. Are LCD screens, for instance, using less energy blocking the light or allowing it to shine through it? Simply asking, using other that CRTs is a black background actually saving energy?

I have come across this before. The answers are here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackle.com

And extensively retested recently here

Blackle makes next to no difference, on average, with LCD monitors.

So yes it does, but only by a small amount in some cases (and in some monitor cases it actually uses more power). The numbers given on the Blackle site are way out based on actual testing.

Another case of improper testing and assumptions which lead people to believe something (bad marketing promoting their product/idea or just an honest mistake?).
