Exporting Lines, Not Splines, in SolidWorks

07/21/2009 4:18 PM

I am using Solidworks 2009, and when exporting a drawing to .dwg it will export round edges as splines instead of lines. Is there a way to change this?

For example, for a simple shaft in side view, the ends will export as lines, but the top and bottom edges will be splines.

If I could change this to export as a line it would make it much easier to work with the exported .dwg file.

Thanks!

Just out of curiosity, why are you trying to work with it after exporting it to a DWG?

I still prefer ACAD for detailing work, especially welds.

Welds aren't bad in SolidWorks. I

Why go to the extra steps of creating a model in SolidWorks and then exporting it to a different CAD program for detailing. That creates a bigger mess for any future ECO's or changes. Multiple files to change and update.

Personally I would never go back to a 2D CAD package after working in the 3D world.

My CAD includes SolidWorks, Inventor, ProE Wildfire 3 for the 3D world & AutoCAD and Cadkey for the 2D world.

Doh!

Is this something that was created in Solidworks as a solid model? If so, Solidworks completely automates all those pesky little things you are going to do manually in ACAD.

When creating the model, Create it correctly, and all the welds will be perfectly annotated and shown with NO errors, with literally three or four clicks. I suggest learning the great software you have, and not reverting back in time and technology. I can guarantee you will shave hours from your drawing when its modeled correctly from the beginning in Solidworks. You will NEVER need to muck around with Lines on a drawing again, or filling out BOM's, Or part bubbles, or dimensions... (the list goes on and on)

Let the tool do the work.

I agree. GA. Mixing ACAD and SW is something like the old law that required horses to pull cars through some small towns.

I have a similar issue. Mine is driven by the fact we have 50,000 old AutoCAD drawings on hand. We often perform equipment upgrades and corrections. We use SolidWorks for all of the design work. Many times we have modeled the surrounding area, but sometimes does not permit, or it is not feasible, so we bring exported SolidWorks DWG files and combine them with old AutoCAD files. This is a great way to check for clearances, interferences, etc.

So I to have issues with the exported SolidWorks DWG file and spend time cleaning them up.

Any ideas? Can the export to DWG be changed or specified in any way?

Have you tried saving it as a .dxf file first and then reopen it in SolidWorks and then export it as a .dwg?

I am assuming the end user is using AutoCad because it cost too much to enter the 3D world. (not really true.)
