IAS requires hard work and guidance as well. It is better to have coaching for guidance and direction. Most importantly you will have like minded people as a group.

Yes you can if you have will. When I did before decide to move out took guidance but locked out myself from friends and party and gave 150% needed to do and did. Guidance does help and it does not come out free. This is also true for every thing else.

I have prepared for IAS dedicated 1.5 yrs. I took coaching in the best institutes in Delhi. I was even the best student in coaching class, answering all the questions thrown to a class of 300 students. But I Failed. Reason -- I did not put HARDWORK into it. I am brilliant, and among the few toppers in my field, but I failed.

I know that those who pass the exam have the following qualities in common --

1. 100% efforts only on IAS.

2. If you can study like a donkey works without giving up.

3. At least put 10-12 hrs a day to study.

4. Have a firm & strict discipline towards your schedule.

5. Isolate yourself from all the luxaries.

6. Any Average intelligence person can become IAS. The only difference is that he has to work for it like a DOG. DAY n NIGHT.

7. Coaching will help immensely to motivate you, direct you and make you finish your syllabus in less time (Approx 1.5 yrs). Also you can study in groups.

8. If you are not taking coaching, you will definitely put in more efforts.

9. If you want to continue your job as well as IAS studies, its possible. But it can take you 2 years or more to complete the syllabus. Clear the prelims while on job. Take 3 months off after prelims for mains preparation. Resume your job after mains exam. Take 1 month off in case you are called for Intervieew.

10. Best, purchase a "Civil Services Planner" available in market. This will be your stepping stone and has all info. to get started.
