Porosity can be caused by many things but nearly always it is cause by oxygen contamination of the the weld molten puddle. Usually is weld joint cleanliness or insufficiant shielding gas. Anything that can burn and create smoke can push the shielding gas away from the weld puddle area and let oxygen contaminate it. Be sure to clean everything very well and do not touch the weld area before welding is started. Any kind of oil can cause porosity even oil from your skin. Alot of titanium is welded in chambers purged with argon to eliminate this. Look at what you are doing, would it help to use a argon trailer or back purge to help protect the molten puddle more? First you must have clean plates. Then you need to use a controlled environment, like a sand blasting cabinet with low pressure of argon pumping in it. This will help clean the weld up while welding.
