Fluid Mechanics in Overhead Water Tank

hi, in the overhead water tank with the help of T joint at the bottom of the tank-one end is connected to tank,another to the supply line and from 3rd end there is a pipeline which is in vertically upward vented to atmosphere.could you tell me why this venting is provided?And from the solar heated water tank the length of this vertical pipe is very high,could you explain me why??

Probably just to allow for expansion or pump pressure.

Water expands with heat.
If it is a solar hot water system it may well have a circulation pump... (mine does)

I think at the beginning of pipe line if all the outlets are closed and drain valve is opened, The trapped air in pipe will not let the water to go in. This vertical pipe work like an air breather and offer an easy exit for air.

If air vent is big enough, may be cat also will enter in.

From my side, I bet on thermal expansion and vapor condensation. ... snakes would not be able to go out from that long pipe up...

I agree with the comments; Breather, expansion and also as a guage for inlet pressure and if there is a graduated glass on one side of this vertical tube, this could indicate water level, when in steady flow.

Vertical pipe is intended for pressure relief purpose. Since it is a solar heated water tank, water expands and contract due thermal changes. pressure increases due to increase in temperature and pressure decreases when temperature decreases. In this case pressure is release when the tank temperature increases.
