CT Connection

07/28/2009 8:32 AM

Hey.....If I reverse the current transformer (CT1) primary connection feeding from another CT2(P1 to S2(ct2) & P2 to S1(ct1)) instead of (P1 to S1(ct2) & P2 to S2(ct1) finally being connected to the ammeter will there be any problem in measurement.....???

If I understand correctly then No.

The Line Current (I) is reduced to the ratio n1 ie the current at the secondary of CT1 is I/n1

Then as you connect it on the second transformer (n2) this line current (I/n1 ) is reduced to I/n1n2 on the secondary of the CT2

But this is only if you want to measure the current. If it is for any other measurement - remember the current is now 180o out of phase with the primary. And that will create havoc with power measurements.

I agree with guru sb.

This can be done for ammeter with having correct reading but it won't work for other meters (such as Watt meter, Energy meter, pf meter etc.) where the CT polarity is a concern.

If your two CT's are measuring the same phase for a multi generator cross-current-compensation circuit, then they will null each other out and the machines will not balance load properly in Isochronous mode.
