What Is the Best Controller for Hybride Power System?

12/11/2006 4:26 AM

Hi all,

I want to combine -48 VDC sytem : Photovoltaic (solar cell), battery, rectifier, inverter,Generator set in one power system,so they can work with many configuration refer to the situation.Let say,at midday, photovoltaic is work for charging battery & supply load.At night battery discharge to supply load.Generator set as standby,in some cases have trouble battery at night or Photovoltaic at midday,or maintenance, the genset will ON.So the controller can smart controlling the situation include protect battery overcharging,Low voltage battery disconnect, blocking current, etc.

Did someone has used similar smart controller as i told above? Any recommendation, the brand & type? Please help...

I have no experience, I'll say that right off. I thought of a PLC controller while you were describing your idea. With voltmeters and light sensors the PLC could control the Generator and the switch between the three sources. Allen Bradley and Siemens both make high quality PLCs. The programming in the key both for efficiency and absolute power conversion. ATS Automation has a Solar Division in France that makes round solar panels to capture the solar power better, although you could just have a small motor to move the panel as needed.

I dont know the switch. but I think its very easy to buid up by oneself using some comparators like LM339 and a microchip to construct an intelligentize controller.

If you have the money to spend there are several companies that manufacture Uninterruptible Power Supplies UPS that have multiple raw power inputs like mains power, generator sets etc. These units are engineered to be 100% reliable and are accordingly very expensive but you could probably buy something off the shelf that cold do what you wand with minimal alteration.

If you havn't got the money and you are building the system yourself from scratch then I would agree that the way to go would be a Programmable Logic Controller PLC to monitor and control the system.

Look for some UPS diagram. They have some fast switch and you can get the idea how to control what you want.

Picmicrocontroller started to been used on UPS because it is cheap and easy to use. Try it.

Good Luck!!
