CNC Tool Holders with Microchips

07/30/2009 9:05 AM

Hi all,

I started a new job last week going back to manufacturing engineering (previously design). Anyway, the first problem I ran into is my company has two Cincinnati Milacron machining centers with tool holders that have microchips imbedded in the side. These chips give the machine all the information it needs about the tool.

The problem is, when they bought the machines years ago, they didn't buy the machine that programs the tool holder microchip. That has not been too much of a problem till now because they ran the same jobs all the time and just reset the tools to the original lengths.

Now they want to put a new job on there and we need a machine that can program the microchip.

Anyone know where we can get one? Google came up short for me...

thanks

Hi Labyguy - good 'un on the new job.....MILO will be a better source, but let me try & help, if at all..

I would call Lloyd Graff (owner) at 708-535-2200 of Graff-Pinkert - he's got his hands in a lot of places - pretty good fella...

Also, get on http://www.pmpa.org/ - do some research & hit the blogs

AND - I have to ask - did you peruse http://www.globalspec.com/

Thanks for the reference, CUTiger.

I gave (via private email ) Labyguy the name of a former Cincinatti employee who is still in the industry via publishing and will forward email and phone #'s when I get back to office monday.

If that doesn't work, I'll get the machine details from Labyguy and post on our closed Members only technical listserves.

If Lloyd isnt available, ask for his brother Jim or for Rex Magannotti.

Great advice!

Try contacting Sandvik Coromant. Their network can be very resourceful in finding a solution.

Hi,

What you have are tool holders with RFID chips embedded in them. There are several companies that have tool setters that will do what you need but the 2 I'm familiar with are Parlec (www.parlec.com) and Zoller (www.zoller-usa.com). Both of these companies offer both manual tool setters and automated tool setters with the option to program the RFID chips. Since they are Cincinnati Milacron, the RFID chips are probably Balluff (www.balluff.com) but you will definitely need to work with the tool setter companies to get the right equipment to program the chips. The other option is to get an "offline" system from Balluff (or whoever manufactured the chips) to program the chips but that would be the last resort.

Cincinnati Milacron was Cincinnati Lamb at one time. It also may be owned by Unova. The best information could come from some the Cincinnati salesmen that are scattered around Charlotte, where they had a large sales staff. Since many of them are selling machine tools they would be glad to help. I sold cincinnati machines until about 1988, and cannot remember how the system worked. I have not spoke to any past salesmen in some years and do not recall the names of the the companies that they are now working for. It is likely anything you need could be purchased used. There is a large surplus of used equipment (I am in the business) that would be very cheap. You can email me for any advice I can give tritools@aol.com

Hi LABYGUY. I contacted Chris Koepfer, editor at ProductionMachining and former CINCINNATI guy.

Here's his prompt as hell reply:

I talked to Cincinnati's service parts department. They suggested your guy call 800 934-0735 and ask for Steve Burger. He's their cell expert and may be able to help.

Good luck in your new position.

Heres an article I wrote you might find interesting: http://www.productionmachining.com/articles/adjusting-to-unleaded.aspx
