Meter for PEG Station

07/31/2009 10:31 AM

I need help in purchasing a meter for measuring signal strength on our CCTV system. I need a meter for running cables to classroom televisions(Rats nest in ceilings) as well as a long cable run for a "Camplex" system. Three long coaxial cable runs from station to gym are not working (They worked in the past). The "Camplex" system sends power, audio and video signals to Broadcast cameras. I want to know if there is not enough power going to the cable, RF signal is to weak, fluorescent lights are causing problems, etc. I have spent hours on google searching for answers but would like some more advice. Since we are a public school the budget is extremely limited.

Hello Guest,

Since yours is an institution, it is better to scope the work and invite competent service providers to quote for it. With a provider chosen, you may then go into negotiation knowing your budget limitations.

Meanwhile, the signal strength meter I know is from Televes range of products (Televes Multi meter FSM 500) It is mainly used in CATV networks but is also handy for CCTV networks.

Also, your cable network is better replaced with Fibre optic cables. Use multi mode fibre for cable runs less than 1km and single mode for runs greater than 1km. This will eliminate the flourescent interference and other EMI's and get the signal losses to negligible values if any.

With the knowledge of your CCTV equipment, you should appreciate the interfaces and choose the type of media converters to use.

The last three paragraphs will help you do a good supervision on your chosen service provider should you choose to do so.

Hei, try to register

Cheers,

ethobil

thank-you for the reply. I was hoping to find a meter more in the $500 range. Our institution has barely enough funds to buy paper and ink for our copy machines, lol. For now I'll just keep the trial and error method going.
