Simple Algebra Problem?

08/07/2009 9:25 AM

I can't seem to get this one. I have 2 equations and 2 unknowns. How do I solve for the variables a and b?

1. 1.5 = 1/a + 1/b

2. 1.25 = 1/a^2 + 1/b^2

My brain isn't functioning correctly. Must be the lack of sleep.

I'd use an Abacus.

Actually, some volunteer stormtroopers and I tried to help our guest with his homework, believe it or not. The problem was, his problem dealt in fractions, and none of us knew the values of either a or b. And since I don't have a calculator with me and R2-D2 is now with my son, the only tool I had with me was my lightsaber. And let's just say that after a few trial-and-error experimentation with my lightsaber to cut out some fractions to determine the values of a & b, I ran out of stormtroopers to assist me, and no one else wanted to volunteer to help either. So I'm afraid I can't help our guest after all .

Gotta go off to Kamino now. I have to place an order for another 100 clones to replace the stormtroopers who volunteered to help me solve our guest's problem .
