Plastic Bearings

08/12/2009 10:42 AM

While going through a write-up on Plastic Bearings (strength, durability, and reliability) I came across a statement, "This type of bearing should really never be used for linear motion".

Piston elements, Piston rod elements are typical applications for linear motion and 'filled polymers' are best preferred for these application.

What else is better preferred then?

He means precisely this type, and this is not plastic.

Plastic bearings are in use in linear motion. But the lubrication for these is just a bit different. And the specific design of igus may not be suitable to maintain the lube film.

The statement is referring to sintered bronze bearing not plastic. Which I agree with they do poorly in linear application.

Yes, I over looked those details.

It is also indicated as, "Unlike a sintered-bronze bushing, polymer bearings release solid lubricants as soon as the bearing or shaft is set in motion. The fibre-reinforced materials inside the bearing withstand any high forces or edge loads".

sb, ozzb, thanks for pointing out.
