Replacing Adobe PageMill 3.0

08/14/2009 10:16 PM

Hi

I currently maintain a software development website which has been passed over to me recently.

Its edited on the most ancient editor Adobe Pagemill 3.0. The pages are built up here and uploaded to the server.

Now, while I have gotten used to using this programme it is obviously not the best position to be in and I really would like to transfer to another programme but have no idea where to start.

I hope someone is able to help!

Thanks

Jess

I'm not so sure you can easily transfer to another page-builder, unless it's some other flavour of Adobe. The different software available tend to use different methods (not that there are many basic differences, but they have individual quirks of structure). If you're only tweaking to maintain the site, maybe you could start of by editing the html code directly yourself. Use an ftp program to look at all the files, and experiment by trying a few minor adjustments by editing the files in notepad or similar. Have you seen this thread ; http://cr4.globalspec.com/blogentry/9741/Basic-HTML-An-Introduction.

My knowledge on the topic is zilch compared to many here, so I'd await more input if I was you. Apart from the above link, plenty of places on the web can help you get to grips with html/web-page design.

If you can figure out the basics, and the structure of the html you already have, you could possibly import it into another site-building program and tweak from there, but it may be a lot easier (in the long run) to do it all yourself. Your software is maybe 10 years old (!). Doing it all yourself would also make you a little more critical to the company running it's site

The are a number of programs that can convert, say, Word documents to .pdf format- I have used a couple of them, and they are pretty effective. Unfortunately, I don't have links to any of them on this computer. They essentially work by "printing" to a file in postscript format. The ones I have used effectively have been free.

Hi,
Let me join the club! I have been using Adobe Pagemill from new,
and I'm still stuck on it! I bought Golive - but just couldn't figure it.
(hence I cannot recommend it.)

I have tried many other web applics. The one with which I had the
most success (in using) is Dreamweaver 4. - I stress 4 because
after 4 they moved on - and now made their app. almost impossible
to follow. - with facilities for php servers, multi screens, etc..

The good news is you can pick up a copy of DW4 for peanuts; and,
there are also "loads" of different free web site applications to download.
(just google, web apps, programming applications, free apps. etc. )
Try them all in turn - first make a restore point on the pc, - install applic.,
try it; and then if you don't like it, do a "restore" to the previous date.

I just wish they would remember us oldies who cannot remember
what we read on page 2, - when we get to page 20 of the manuals.

Hope this helps.

I just can't remember where! (quote)
