Anybody Understand Earthlink?

08/19/2009 10:55 PM

My wife subscribes to Earthlink, and has eight email addresses. She uses one of them. I thought I might grab one of them for myself. I tried to change one of them (name and email address), but ran into a huge obstacle: Namely, Earthlink. I got a gigantic runaround on their automatic "help" system, where I kept answering the same questions over and over, but got nowhere.

So my question is, can I change the email address of one of the eight free addresses? If so, how?

I don't think you can change one of the listings she has created - we used to have earthlink, but I can't remember if you have hit the Max. number of addresses?

BTW - Earthlink is bleeding customers for the last year or so - Customer No-Service is only one of the issues....

Is Earthlink also your IP?

Earthlink is not my email server, but the one I have has gone to hell. I need to change, and just thought I could tag onto my wfie's Earthlink. They gave her 8 addresses when she signed up, but she only uses one of them. If I could change one of those addresses to something that at least sounds like me, I could use it.

Delete one then create a new one for you...

Thanks! That worked. I should be on in 20 minutes.

Next questions, O earthlink guru:

Can I use Microsoft Outlook with Earthlink?

Can I export my Outlook address files to Earthlink?

Does Earthlink have an upper limit on how many emails I can send at one time? (I am not a spammer. I have a small marcom agency and I send out press releases to 200 magazines around the world)

You might give Gmail a look, which will probably still be around in a couple of years

Yes you can, I have used Earthlink since I first went on line.

Well, I must say, I have tried some others, but keep going back to ELN.

I find there service the most superb of all and I use ELN High speed.

Customer service is great and for some reason when I switched back to ELN from Verizon, my speed increased.

I use Outlook as my primary email, conversion was easy.

my suggestion is, and do keep an open communication w/your wife since all eight email addresses were from her subscription...anyhoo, my suggestion is to delete anyone of the addresses that is least in used, therefore, freeing up a space for a new free email address to be created from the same account. with most servers, even when you delete an email address, it still remains with the original owner for up to six months. so, if at some point during this duration you no longer need your free email address, she can reactive her previously deleted address. hope this helps.

I did exactly that. I also keep good communications with my wife. I have to: she's a lawyer. Been with her for prit near 40 years.

Eathlink is not the most friendly or easiest to use site in the world, but it seems to be working.

Now I have another problem. I can send email to anybody on earthlink, but not to anyone else. Emails to outsiders go off into the ether and disappear. Anybody know what all this is about?

Nope! I've used Earthlink for many years, and send and receive to/from any correct address. I'd guess there is some setting screwed up somewhere in your mail program.
