Oxygen Sensor Removal

08/21/2009 3:57 AM

Hello again Gentlemen

I am replacing the oxygen sensor on my volvo 960

It comprises a cylinder about 1 inch diameter and 2 inch long. There is no flat edges to use a spanner. Do I just use a mole wrench or is there some other removal method.

It is delicate like aluminium and will disentegrate if i use a mole grip

it looks in good condition. The car has done 60,000 miles (15 years old)

All of the O2 sensors that I have seen have a threaded portion th hold it into the exhaust system. There was also a hex shaped area that was used to turn it. Have you obtained the replacement sensor yet? It should look just like the one you are replacing. If you have not gotten the new one yet, let me know, I can probably post a picture of the replacement part. Good luck.

If its being replaced why worry about breaking it?

Give it hell and then use the correct tool for the new one.

A lot of times I just bust off the old one entirely and get on it with a pipe wrench or weld a big nut over the base and use an impact gun if space allows it.

And don't forget to get very generous with the anti-seize goo when you install the new sensor! That way the next guy doesn't have to use a pipe wrench or impact gun to get it back out!

Be certain to avoid getting the anti-seize on the sensor element as this could ruin the sensor. A little on the threaded portion is all that is required. You may also require a tap to clean up the mess left removing the old sensor if it is a screwed in type.

If you start the engine and let it run a few minutes to warm up, you will find it will come out much easier and save the threads as well. Just be sure to shut it off before removing the sensor!

Most places like Autozone and Kragen will loan you the tool to remove the O2 sensor. It looks like a socket with one side missing. Also don't get silicone or anti-seize compound on the sensor, or it will fail. BTW, nice car, I have a '87 760 Turbo with 200,000 miles on it. I hope this helped, Mike.

You can also buy the tool at any auto parts store ,they are as cheap to buy as to rent . Specify your make and model to the clerk as different cars use different sizes.
