A shop that has a Tech2 GM scan tool, and a technician well versed in the security system can use the scanner to find out what is causing the problem. There will be codes set in the security module that will give a direction to the problem. Trying to fix something like this without the proper equipment, training & information can be quite costly.

I presume you have keyless entry? If so, you might try locking and unlocking the door with the key. That should prevent the anti-theft alarm from setting.

You can also prevent it by shutting down the engine then turning the ignition switch back on briefly before turning it to off and removing the key.

Usually the ignition lock VATS module is failing.

A scan tool may pin it down.

The the part is relatively expensive, around $200.

To reprogram after installation:

Crank to start. It will stall (turns off the fuel pump) and the anti-theft light will flash.

LEAVE THE KEY ON!!!!!!!!!! the light will remain flashing, for up to 20 minutes.

When it stops flashing, turn the key to off, then start normally. Use a battery charger, if your battery is marginal.

Disable the system. Car is not worth taking care of anti-theft system. Feel happy if some one attempt to steal the car.

While this is not a collection car, there might be good reasons for the owner to keep it, maybe he received it as a gift, or has a lot of memories or just for economic reasons.

I have a 1976 vehicle that is worth to keep its anti-theft system working, it's a JEEP CJ5 in pretty good condition and has given me lots of wild adventures.
