Barrel Compressor Resources

08/22/2009 10:27 PM

Hi, all.

I'm a Millwright, and have worked on quite a few Centrifugal Compressors in the Plants, as well as Recips. One style I haven't worked on however, is the Barrel Compressor. I know it basically is a Centrifugal, but it does have it's differences, I'm sure. I googled "Barrel Compressors", and came up with absolutely nothing. I'd appreciate any resource links that any of you may have, as well as the opportunity to read any information you have personally with these. Always looking to learn...

Many thanks, T

Google Dresser Rand Datum compressor. That is their current barrell compressor model and is pretty typical.

Basically a barrel machine the same as a horizontal split, it just opens on the end walls and you pull out the rotor and the diaphragms together through the end rather than lifting the lid.

Thanks, will check this out. Having watched this type being disassembled once, I must ask the question: With a horizontal split being so much easier to remove the rotor, what is the advantage of the barrell type? It appears to be more labor intensive to overhaul, and if it operates the exact same way...???

The main advantage is pressure. A barrel machine can handle a much higher pressure due to the way it seals off. A big, long, horizontal split is harder to seal. This is especially true in hydrogen service. Hydrogen is hard to seal at any pressure, but high pressure hydrogen in a refinery is even harder. A barrel machine has advantages in this. Essentially in a barrel machine you have a horizontal split shoved inside a barrel. This makes for better sealing.

Barrel machines are also used in high pressure re-injection machines in the oil field.

Modern barrel machines are not really more labor intensive, they just need the room to pull the bundle. If there is stuff in the way, then yes there is more labor involved moving things. Advantage over a top connected horizontal split is that you don't have to pull piping.

The other advantage of a barrel machine is that in a re-rate, you can leave the barrel on the deck as is, pop out the old bundle, pop in a new re-rated bundle (including a different number of impellers and different stationary gas path) and you are back in business with essentially a brand new machine. On a horizontal split you would need to pull the case and at least machine it, if not replace it to do the same.

Yeah, right after I posted my last response, I started reading. I can see the advantages. I hope I get the opportunity to work on one soon, I know I could learn a lot. I try to go in with an idea of what I want to come out with, and keep the whole in mind along the way. In shutdown mode, it's sometimes hard to do, but I try, nonetheless. Thanks for your input, I will be reading up and looking for an opportunity with my contractors in the meantime.

Respectfully,

T.

You cannot compare apples to planets and those two designs are universes apart in uses and applications.
