How cool..."Pitt researchers have demonstrated a microscopy technique that allows the movement of the plasmons to be seen for the first time, at a resolution a trillion times better than conventional techniques."
The article states that electrons that carry signals moving through the "miles" of wires in semiconductor chips collide with each other quite frequently, and create too much heat, but sending signals through 'plasmons' will significantly reduce the heat and would significantly increase the speed of the new 'plasmon' chips.

I'm not sure why having the electrons oscillate in waves will reduce the number of collisions. The only thin I can think of is that rather than bouncing electrons down the wire like ping pong balls it sends the plasmons down in a polarized manner that reduces them to traveling in a only the x-y axis rather than usual x-y-z axis.
