Irrigation for sugar cane plantations

08/29/2009 4:48 AM

we have around 6000 Ha cane plantations and presently using Pivot and draglines for irrigating the cane crop in west africa.

the forum members who have experience and exposure to irrigation as part of the Agricultural Engg. Projects, please advise on alternative proven systems using reduced water and energy; so that irrigated area can be increased with the same quantity of water.

Check here for a discussion of sugarcane water requirement.

http://www.fao.org/landandwater/aglw/cropwater/sugarcane.stm - sorry, link no longer available

The work I did with USDA in Texas back in the '70s indicated that the water requirement is pretty well fixed by evaporation and yield requirements. We were able to use saline irrigation water up to a point, but could have lost the high salinity plots had not a very wet rainy period set in during late July. Google "saline irrigation of sugarcane" for the report in the research journal. You may wind up deciding on how much yield reduction is tolerable using a limited water supply. The other alternative is to develop additional water assets by recovering water from the atmosphere using one of several ancient technologies.

Dear Guest,

Thanks for your quick advice.

But, we are not having problem of saline water at all.

The water resources are limited.

Exactly, we are also thinking on the lines of 'rain water harvesting'.

The acceptable yield is 100-110 Ton/ Ha.

Regards,

ASHOK.
